‘Mind over Matter’ Weight Loss

Never before have we had such a range of options available for weight loss - it can be downright confusing! What’s more, many of us have tried many of the options out there - often more than once. There comes a time when you may need to stop looking for ‘quick fixes’ and just accept that if you are going to lose weight, it will be up to you and no one else. It’s simple ‘mind over matter’.

Consider a parallel - another problem that many people struggle with - quitting smoking. There are all types of programs to help you quite smoking. There’s nicotine gum, and the patch, and counseling, and hypnotherapy. But for many people who have successfully quit, what it all comes down to is just making up your mind to do it - quitting cold turkey, as it were.

Of course, weight issues are a little more complex because you can’t just ‘quit’ eating! But essentially, it’s the same issue. We each have control over what we put into our mouths, even if it feels out of control at times. We all have choices. Also, in this day and age, we all have a pretty good idea of which foods are causing us to gain weight. We all know what a healthy diet looks like, and we all know that exercise helps a lot, too. The trick is to start acting on all of these things that we already ‘know’!

It’s simple mind over matter, really. The ‘matter’ is that the food is there, and we want to eat it. The ‘mind’ means having self control. If you know you shouldn’t eat it, then don’t. It really is as simple - and as hard - as that.

Most weight problems, when you come right down to it, are behavioral issues. That means that there is seldom any medical reason for gaining weight and keeping it on (though there may, of course, be exceptions to this. Some people do have legitimate medical conditions that make it more difficult for them to lose weight.) For most of us, though, it’s because of bad habits. We all know what they are. We know that eating at night is bad, for example, because there’s no opportunity to work off those calories - but we do it anyway. Everyone knows that snack foods and candy don’t do you any favors, but the impulse to snack on them may seem overwhelming.

Start by taking stock - make a list of all the unhealthy eating habits you plan to eliminate. Be firm, yet realistic. If you find it difficult to assess your eating habits by yourself, you can enlist some help, of course - ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist or dietician to go over your eating habits in detail, or join a personalized weight loss program where the same type of service is provided.

Once you have a clear idea of which foods need to be eliminated and how you can improve the quality of your meals, just start doing it. Don’t wait until next week, or until after the holidays - just start. Be determined and single minded. Keep in mind that this lifestyle change may end up saving your life, or at least improving your quality of life in a big way. You are doing it for yourself, and for everyone in your life who would like to see you healthy and happy.

Here’s another hint - if you slip up and make a mistake, don’t let it stop you. Start again, with the very next meal. Your whole plan will not be ruined because of one or two mistakes, but if you use those mistakes as an excuse to abandon the plan altogether, that’s a totally different story.

Here’s the last step - even after you have achieved your weight loss goal, make those changes permanent. All too many of us become ‘yo-yo dieters’ - we diet successfully, then gain everything back, then have to diet again. Over time, this can put more strain on your body than if you had never lost the weight in the first place! So make sure that you come up with an eating plan you can live with, and be prepared to live with it for the rest of your life. That doesn’t mean you can never enjoy your favorite dessert again - but it does mean that, the morning after, you get back to healthy eating.

Your Standards of Living

Your conscience and culture both prescribe a certain order of the way things are intended to chronologically take place in your life. In addition, each individual has a personal comfort level, a specific system of values regulated by his conscience. When the personal expectations you demand from yourself fall below the moral limitations you have subconsciously defined, an inward feeling of inadequacy, defeat and failure result.

Take a serious look at your environment and your style of life. This includes how you look, how you care for your possessions, how you decorate your home, how you spend your money and the people you spend your time with. If each of these elements is not perfectly suited to your inborn personality, a nagging feeling will eventually evolve in the back of your mind that something isn’t “quite right.”

Any deviation from your subconsciously defined, inborn values can trigger this obsession. Even the smallest maladjustments can impair happiness and need to be corrected. Make up your mind to eliminate all emotional discomfort from your life.

Once you have reached this “comfort level” in your own mind, you acquire a feeling of personal satisfaction and inward contentment. Contentment is derived from knowing you have done everything you could possibly do to correct, modify or improve any negative situation within your control.

Of course you can’t change some things and you have to accept those hindrances for what they are, but simply knowing you are doing your best, despite the obstacles, is the comforting factor.

There are housekeeping standards, nutritional standards, moral standards and standards that regulate every avenue of your life. Commonly referred to as “personal standards,” these values vary within each individual.

Your system of values, frankly, boils down to how much you care. Caring - about yourself, about the impression you leave on others, about your possessions, about your finances, or about any other aspect of your life - indicates that your standards are high. As a general rule, your standards in one area will not vary much from your standards in other areas of your life.

Those who perpetually live in a state of confusion without shame, trepidation or without any intentions of making it better are those whose standards are less than desirable. They plainly don’t care. If they don’t care about their own home environment, their personal values in other areas of their lives are probably of the same sub-standard level.

Things can, and often do, get temporarily out of hand. Life does occasionally become chaotic even for those with exceptionally high standards; but just because it does, that doesn’t mean your standards have fallen. In your own mind you know that you will make every effort to correct these situations as soon as possible.

Eating For Success Breakfast For The Busy Corporate

The first place that we cut corners when we are busy or stressed is our eating and in particular our breakfast. The food you eat forms the very building blocks of your body, but most of us have lost sight of the fact that food is fuel and that the purpose of eating is to provide our bodies with the tools they need for energy, functioning, building and maintenance. We eat for a variety of different reasons, none of which relate to the idea of providing our bodies with quality fuel. We eat unconsciously, we use food to fill emotional voids or to be sociable and we fill our bodies with things that we all know aren’t good for us - in effect, rather than using food as essential fuel, we use it to inflict damage on ourselves.

Here are 3 options for a quick and easy, healthy breakfast to kick start your day. All recipes take only five minutes or less to prepare.

1. Protein Power Shake -
Mix in a blender - 1 piece of fruit i.e. banana or mango are divine

1. 1 handful of almonds (for protein and good fats)
2. Milk or Water for liquid (I use water to save the extra calories)
3. 1 dessertspoon of flaxseed oil (for good fats)
4. Cinnamon or nutmeg to taste

2. Protein Pan Cakes -

1. Beat 2 tablespoons of raw rolled oats into 2 egg whites and cook on a hot pan (no oil)
2. Top with a piece of fruit chopped up, low fat cottage cheese and some real maple syrup or honey.

3. Cottage Cheese, Nuts and Fruit - This is the quickest, cut up a piece of fruit, top with a handful of raw almonds and some low fat cottage cheese. Eat and go.

All of these quick breakfasts can be prepared and eaten at home in a space where you can mentally prepare for the day. Eating on the run at work is not feeding your body energy.

Start the day with a simple breakfast at home.
