Take Back Your Life 3

In parts one and two of this series, titled “Take Back Your Life” and “Take Back Your Life 2″; we discussed the importance of proper cell function and the necessity of having and maintaining a balanced endocrine system as they relate to wellness. Here in part 3, we shall examine why vitamins and minerals, including certain trace minerals are absolutely necessary to further insure and maintain a state of wellness and optimum health.

Fresh foods have, in the past, been the main source that provided vitamins and minerals essential to the properly functioning, healthy human body. These nutrients, naturally occurring in some fresh fruits and vegetables, can and have, in the past given our bodies what was needed for health and vitality. Today, however, because of modern farming, harvesting, storage, and food processing methods, our formally nutrient rich food sources contain lower levels of some vitamins and minerals for supporting and maintaining good health. We still need to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in our daily food consumption, but we also need to complement that dietary habit with adequate, high quality, food formed vitamin and mineral supplements in order to insure that our healthy, active lifestyles which include proper diet and exercise are contributing to the desired state of optimal health.

Today, nutritionists remind us that we need to eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables including a healthy balance of dairy products, lean meats, and whole grains. But with modern methods of processing whereby our foods are boiled, microwaved, canned, frozen, refined, pasteurized, and laced with additives intended to help preserve them, our fresh fruits and vegetables are lower in vitamins and minerals today than they were even 30 years ago. One example from a recent study reported that two peaches would have supplied the current RDA of vitamin A for adult women in 1951. Today, a woman would have to eat almost 53 peaches to meet her daily requirements! These losses are due, primarily to the fact that food science has focused on the issues of mass production, visual appearance, and physical features that motivate people to buy rather than nutrient content. The average fruit or vegetable travels 1,500 to 2,500 miles from the farm to your plate. They are grown, harvested, stored, and handled with this in mind as priority of waste and product loss before being sold, trump any concerns for nutrient content and health benefits. There are extensive losses of many important nutrients during all stages of food production as our foods move from the farms to our tables to be eaten. Therefore we must supplement our diets with high quality food formed vitamins and minerals in order to achieve the health benefits that we desire.

Health is defined in Stedman’s medical dictionary as a state of normal functioning without evidence of disease or abnormality. That means feeling good, being symptom free, having all organ systems apparently functioning normally, no evidence of disease, and enough energy to do what we want to do. The lifestyle choices that we make are contributing factors in the quest for optimal health. Choices can be made that will have a major impact on our health. These choices include lifestyle, diet and nutrition. This is why it is highly recommended that we exercise, eat well, and supplement wisely. To be included in our diets are certain fruits and vegetables that help our bodies fend off disease. Amounts recommended include eating 5 to 9 varied servings of fruits and vegetables every day. It is further recommended that these food servings include cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruit, dark leafy vegetables and yellow/orange/red vegetables with three different colors per day. The vast majority of people in Western countries do not eat like this, which leads to poor health and desperate disease states. This being the case, if we will not eat the ideal diet, for whatever reason, it becomes absolutely necessary that we supplement our diets, with whole food based supplements. Isolated synthetics will not do the trick. Food formed vitamins and minerals as close to that found in Nature are best.

“Vita”, the Latin word for “life”, is the root of “vitamin”, the name given to certain nutrients identified as essential to life. Certain minerals have also been shown to be vitally important to human health. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients that work together with enzymes to facilitate the chemical reactions involved in virtually every process in the body. Shortage of necessary vitamins or minerals can block critical functions. A certain level of intake of specific vitamins and minerals is required for optimal health. Micronutrient deficiencies in the diets of many people, I believe, contribute to many of our disease conditions that exist today. And because of this widely held association, I cannot think of anyone who would not benefit from this type of supplementation to their daily diet. Daily supplementation is certainly very important to help avoid the risks to our health that are associated with poor diet. But, be careful! Not all vitamin and mineral supplements are created equal. There are vast differences between brands. Experts have learned that taking too much of certain vitamins is not healthy and can actually cause health problems. Ratios of one ingredient to another can also make a significant difference in how well any vitamin product will work. Be sure to get a comprehensive multivitamin and mineral supplement that is formulated to give you what you need and that is food formed so that your body may recognize and utilize these beneficial nutrients. And above all else remember to drink plenty of pure, enhanced water, move your body, eat well, and supplement wisely so that you can take back your life.

‘Mind over Matter’ Weight Loss

Never before have we had such a range of options available for weight loss - it can be downright confusing! What’s more, many of us have tried many of the options out there - often more than once. There comes a time when you may need to stop looking for ‘quick fixes’ and just accept that if you are going to lose weight, it will be up to you and no one else. It’s simple ‘mind over matter’.

Consider a parallel - another problem that many people struggle with - quitting smoking. There are all types of programs to help you quite smoking. There’s nicotine gum, and the patch, and counseling, and hypnotherapy. But for many people who have successfully quit, what it all comes down to is just making up your mind to do it - quitting cold turkey, as it were.

Of course, weight issues are a little more complex because you can’t just ‘quit’ eating! But essentially, it’s the same issue. We each have control over what we put into our mouths, even if it feels out of control at times. We all have choices. Also, in this day and age, we all have a pretty good idea of which foods are causing us to gain weight. We all know what a healthy diet looks like, and we all know that exercise helps a lot, too. The trick is to start acting on all of these things that we already ‘know’!

It’s simple mind over matter, really. The ‘matter’ is that the food is there, and we want to eat it. The ‘mind’ means having self control. If you know you shouldn’t eat it, then don’t. It really is as simple - and as hard - as that.

Most weight problems, when you come right down to it, are behavioral issues. That means that there is seldom any medical reason for gaining weight and keeping it on (though there may, of course, be exceptions to this. Some people do have legitimate medical conditions that make it more difficult for them to lose weight.) For most of us, though, it’s because of bad habits. We all know what they are. We know that eating at night is bad, for example, because there’s no opportunity to work off those calories - but we do it anyway. Everyone knows that snack foods and candy don’t do you any favors, but the impulse to snack on them may seem overwhelming.

Start by taking stock - make a list of all the unhealthy eating habits you plan to eliminate. Be firm, yet realistic. If you find it difficult to assess your eating habits by yourself, you can enlist some help, of course - ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist or dietician to go over your eating habits in detail, or join a personalized weight loss program where the same type of service is provided.

Once you have a clear idea of which foods need to be eliminated and how you can improve the quality of your meals, just start doing it. Don’t wait until next week, or until after the holidays - just start. Be determined and single minded. Keep in mind that this lifestyle change may end up saving your life, or at least improving your quality of life in a big way. You are doing it for yourself, and for everyone in your life who would like to see you healthy and happy.

Here’s another hint - if you slip up and make a mistake, don’t let it stop you. Start again, with the very next meal. Your whole plan will not be ruined because of one or two mistakes, but if you use those mistakes as an excuse to abandon the plan altogether, that’s a totally different story.

Here’s the last step - even after you have achieved your weight loss goal, make those changes permanent. All too many of us become ‘yo-yo dieters’ - we diet successfully, then gain everything back, then have to diet again. Over time, this can put more strain on your body than if you had never lost the weight in the first place! So make sure that you come up with an eating plan you can live with, and be prepared to live with it for the rest of your life. That doesn’t mean you can never enjoy your favorite dessert again - but it does mean that, the morning after, you get back to healthy eating.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #46

I was asked a question recently and thought I would pose the same question to you.

What monetary value do you put on your health?

Think about this. You put a monetary value on your home, on your car, on your furniture..all these things have a monetary value and yet they can be replaced.

Now, let’s look at your health. Is it irreplaceable?

I asked a friend this same question, and she said her health is priceless. Well, what exactly does priceless mean in the context of health.

Before we do this, let’s look at an heirloom which is considered priceless to many. Thus, it’s irreplaceable. You take care of that heirloom. You place it in a space that is protected. You focus on that heirloom with such profound love because you want it to last so you can pass it on to family members. The intent is this heirloom stays in wonderful condition in order to preserve its meaning to all the family who will care for it for years to come. We look at that heirloom and say this is a part of us and it has incredible value.

Well if our health is priceless, then shouldn’t we be treating it in the same respect as our heirloom? Shouldn’t we be preserving our health and loving our bodies so that our family gets the benefit of what meaning we serve in their lives.

Yet, how many of us actually do this on a conscious level?

Most of the population doesn’t take the time nor invest in themselves monetarily choosing those things that will affirm nurturing, love and protection for its most valuable heirloom - YOU! Giving to ourselves each and everyday and investing in those things that affirm health is the most valuable thing you can give your family.

Which would you rather give your family? A necklace passed down from your great grandmother or a healthy, vibrant YOU filled with love for yourself? Which one has more value to pass down from generation to generation?

I can speak about this as my mother died in 1987. I have my mother’s wedding rings that I will pass on, and they do have great meaning. However, I would choose to have a mother who knew how to love herself, who knew how to take care of herself so that I could have learned from her in how to do this for myself. What greater gift is there to pass on?

I spent many years in struggle not understanding how to love myself. It wasn’t just from my mother; it was from my father as well. Neither one of them knew how to love themselves.

Guess what? Now, I have learned how to do this, and am showing my daughter, Lindsay, what this looks like. She, in turn, is finding incredible value from this as she is understanding and taking action in how to do this for herself. As a 21 year old intelligent, beautiful woman, she does the following:

eats nutritious foods
exercises
surrounds herself with positive people
reads spiritual books
loves spending time with herself
gets massages
sees a Naturopathic doctor and nutritionist
sees a chiropractor
dates a young man who treats her with kindness
a senior at the University of Washington majoring in business, and regularly makes the Dean’s list

I am so proud of Lindsay. This picture of her would have looked much different if I hadn’t learned how to lead by example

So let’s go back to my original question. What monetary value do you put on your health?

My answer to this question is.over a million dollars. Thus, I choose to invest my money where I will get the greatest return and that is in myself and Lindsay to keep affirming loving ourselves. Look at this priceless gift that will be passed down to generations to come. Is it worth it? Every penny!

I think of the money that it cost me when I lived in struggle, the energy and the time. Then I have to figure in the monetary amount impact to everyone else when I didn’t love myself.

Protect and nurture YOU to pass down the value to your future generations.
